Zero Downtime: The Christmas Shutdown Machine Relocation
For high-precision manufacturers, reconfiguring a shop floor or moving heavy production assets is always a double-edged sword. While optimising cell layouts and consolidating facilities increases long-term efficiency, doing so during normal operating hours risks costly production downtime.
To overcome this, Alt CNC recently executed a complex, multi-machine site move and workshop reorganisation during the festive shutdown window, making sure there was zero impact on our client’s active manufacturing schedules.
The Challenge: A Strict 4-Day Window
Between 27th and 30th December, our technical team was tasked with a comprehensive shop floor restructuring across two sites. The project scope required:
Clearing the Main Workshop - Clearing existing working space and preparing layout pathways for incoming assets.
Internal Workshop Positioning - Safely disconnecting, shifting, and repositioning 4 major CNC machines (including multi-axis Mazak machining centres) within the primary facility.
Cross-Site Relocation - Decommissioning, transporting, and installing 2 further heavy CNC machines from Site B directly into the main building.
Recommissioning - Levelling, re-aligning, and ensuring all assets were fully prepped to return to work on day one of the new working year.
Executing heavy machinery moves of this scale requires precise transport logistics, specialised lifting equipment, and careful rigging, especially when operating inside tight indoor gangways and variable site access points.
Strategic Execution & Technical Rigging
Working alongside specialist transport partners Silver Knight Haulage & Machineries, our team utilised heavy-duty Versa-Lift forklifts, skate sets, and transport rigging to extract the machines from Site B and manoeuvre them into position.
Decommissioning & Transit - Coolant systems, chip conveyors, and external ancillaries were systematically detached. The machines were then securely skidded, lifted, and transported between facilities to safeguard their structural frames.
Cell Optimisation - Within the main workshop, the 4 internal units were shifted into new cell configurations designed to optimise component workflow, operator movement, and maintenance access.
Geometric Re-Alignment - Once in position, each machine was levelled and re-anchored to ensure baseline geometric alignment and precision tolerances were fully maintained.
Delivering Results Without Missing a Shift
By carrying out the entire teardown, transit, repositioning, and recommissioning between the 27th and 30th of December, the entire project was completed while the client’s production lines were closed for Christmas. When staff returned in January, the restructured shop floor was completely ready to run at peak capacity, without a single hour of lost production.
